Construction of new subway station in Yerevan to begin in 2011 Published on 10 February, 2010
Paylak Yailoyan, director of Yerevan subway, said last Friday construction of a new station to stretch to Achapnyak quarter of the city will kick off in 2011.
He said the construction will be backed by a loan from the Asian Development Bank and a government allocation. He said talks with the bank were underway.
He said also car trucks and wheel pairs of the subway trains which have been used for over 30 years will be replaced in 2010. The company will buy also about 6,000 sleepers for the repair of the railroad.
Last year the Yerevan subway transported 20 million people, up from 19 million in 2008.
“Our citizens have eventually realized the advantage of subway-safety, cleanliness and accuracy,’ he said.
The Yerevan Underground system was launched in 1981. It runs on a 13.4 km (8.37 miles) line and currently services 10 active stations.
