 LHD's design for Split's new Polyclinic make the most of the site's aesthetic features
The close surroundings and the historical site of the Firule area are one of the most enjoyable of Split’s living, working and recreation environments. The extraordinary location of the Polyclinic is one of its greatest advantages. It is located near an existing hospital complex in Firule, close to the sea and fresh air, giving it even more importance and value.
Project of such determinate function requires maximum pragmatism and respect to the competition program, as well as technical and technological equipment and functionality. It was necessary to develop acquired functions vertically in order to place all the services, diagnostics, practices and laboratories as requested. All public spaces are located in the basement, ground and first floors, with the patient clinic and administration on the upper floors and a garage underground.
The main visual element of the building and an accent of the whole house is the facade envelope, made of horizontal bands covering the building like bandages protecting the patient. Like a membrane which protects from the sun, it is a sophisticated light regulator and it conceals as much as it reveals. It is also used as a classic sunshade (sun shutter), its design inspired by one of the most recognizable elements of Split’s modern architecture - Ivo Radic’s 'Briss Soleil'.
Atria / loggias are segments of the exterior and semi public areas placed throughout all floors. They divide and connect spaces of the polyclinic, and instead of an introverted hospital corridor, they provide a relaxing zone filled with Mediterranean greenery, wooden terraces with a view to the sea and the surrounding islands. In the atria, patients, staff and visitors can take a break, take in some fresh sea air and take a walk…even in their pyjamas.
