 Hamburg's newest iconic landmark to be unveiled to the eagerly awaiting public
Over 28th and 29th May, Herzog & de Meuron’s magnificent ‘Elbphilharmonie’ project will be presented to the public in a Roofing ceremony attended by over 5,000 guests. Still in construction, the new concert house is located on the Elbe River in Hamburg, and comprises of three concert halls, one hotel, 45 flats and the Plaza – a public square elevated 37m above the river, affording 360° panoramic views of the city.
The contrast of the glass-bodied new design work by Herzog & de Meuron and the existing historic redbrick monument that is Kaispeicher A makes for a fantastically dramatic structure. Standing at 110m high, the design combines elements of tradition and modernity at a unique location, resulting in a striking new landmark for the city. One of the three acoustically advanced concert halls stands at 50m above the river, providing seating for 2,150 music lovers at a venue that will present some of the world’s finest acoustical talents in the fields of classical music, jazz, pop and world music.
Under the artistic direction of Christoph Lieben-Seutter, the Elbphilharmonie aims to be one the world’s finest music venues. Part of one of Europe’s largest urban development projects, HafenCity Hamburg, more than €77m of the €440 construction costs have been covered by donations and further revenues, showing that even before construction is completed, Elbphilharmonie has been readily adopted by the city of Hamburg.
